"Forest" is a student film directed by Juan Cruz Garoby. I had the opportunity of modelling the main character "Juan" for this (wip) film.
Following the designs by Sarah DonovanĀ , I used the orthographic whilst sculpting, and kept in mind the stylised goal for the character.
That is, keeping the character quite facetedĀ to allow room for the watercoloured surfacing that is to come.
In the earlier stages of the project, I modelled a proxy character for our rigger to get started on a calamari rig. This allowed for animation experimentation to commence early.
I also worked on the hair early on to hand to our FX team to experiment hair simulations. I used nurb-curves and faceted cylinders to hard-surface model the hair.
After the proportions were blocked out, I moved into Zbrush to focus on perfecting the shape and detail of the character. With constant feedback from the team and director I was able to improve the quality of the sculpt.
Moving on to retopology in Maya I focused on adding appropriate loops where necessary for animation deformation, and also hard surface modelled extra details to finish off the character.
